Banking register
This bank register was found in the old Powell homestead located about two miles to the west of the present location of Powell & Stokes/Bertie County Peanuts. The inside cover of the leather register has the name 1st Wheeler Bank 1795. We have been unable to find any reference to such a bank in Windsor or North Carolina.
Look for the name Nancy Kittrell - it appears she served as some sort of clerk, or she may possibly have owned the register. However, the name T or J Wheeler also shows up in the register. Thus, the "bank" may have been "private".
The register pages are filled with banking/loan arrangements dating from the late 1700s into the mid 1800s. Notice the references to pieces of silver, shillings, sixpence, British pounds, and U.S. dollars.
The register opened at the end to allow for the storage of documents. All of the documents found in the register are shown here.
Note the recipe found in the document storage section.
